GES Releases 2026/2027 Academic Calendar for Basic Schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released the approved academic calendar for the 2026/2027 academic year for basic schools across Ghana. The calendar covers Kindergarten, Primary and Junior High Schools (JHS) and provides schools with the dates for reopening, term closures, vacations, mid-term breaks and the scheduled period for the 2027 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

For teachers, headteachers, parents and learners, the release provides an important framework for planning the academic year. With the three terms having different lengths, schools will need to consider how the available teaching time affects curriculum coverage, assessment and other activities throughout the year.

The 2026/2027 academic year will run across three terms. The first term will last 15 weeks, the second term 12 weeks and the third term 14 weeks. Public holidays, mid-term breaks, co-curricular activities and other school programmes will also need to be considered when schools plan the year.

When Will Basic Schools Reopen?
Basic schools are scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, marking the beginning of the first term of the 2026/2027 academic year. Before learners return, schools will need to prepare classrooms, organise timetables, arrange teaching and learning resources and put other arrangements in place for the new academic year.

For teachers, reopening also marks the beginning of a new teaching and learning cycle. The early weeks of the term can be particularly important as teachers get to know their learners, assess their levels and establish classroom routines.

First Term Will Run for 15 Weeks
The first term will begin on Tuesday, 8 September 2026 and end on Thursday, 17 December 2026. A two-day mid-term break is scheduled for Thursday, 5 November and Friday, 6 November, while the Christmas vacation will run from Friday, 18 December 2026 to Monday, 4 January 2027.

The 15-week term gives teachers a substantial period to begin curriculum coverage and establish the pace of learning. However, the number of weeks on the academic calendar does not necessarily represent the exact number of teaching periods available, since public holidays, school programmes and other activities can affect the actual time spent teaching.

Second Term Will Run for 12 Weeks
The second term will be shorter, beginning on Tuesday, 5 January 2027 and ending on Thursday, 25 March 2027. Schools will then go on vacation from Friday, 26 March to Monday, 19 April 2027, before reopening for the third term on Tuesday, 20 April.

The shorter term means curriculum planning will need to be particularly realistic. Teachers may need to consider the number of periods available for each subject, the amount of content to be covered and whether learners are progressing at the expected pace before deciding how much can reasonably be completed during the term.

Third Term Will Run for 14 Weeks
The third term will begin on Tuesday, 20 April 2027 and end on Thursday, 22 July 2027. The end-of-year vacation will begin on Friday, 23 July 2027, bringing the 2026/2027 academic year to a close.

The final term will be important for completing curriculum coverage, conducting assessments and preparing learners for end-of-year activities. For Junior High Schools, the term will also include the 2027 BECE, making early curriculum planning and revision particularly important.

2027 BECE Scheduled for May
The 2027 Basic Education Certificate Examination is scheduled to take place from Wednesday, 5 May to Wednesday, 12 May 2027. The examination period will therefore fall within the third term, giving JHS schools and candidates a clear timeframe around which to organise revision and examination preparation.

For schools with BECE candidates, the examination dates make early planning especially important. Teachers will need to consider curriculum coverage, revision, assessment and other school activities so that candidates are adequately prepared before the examination begins.

What the Calendar Means for Teachers
The academic calendar provides the framework for teachers to organise their teaching across the school year, but it does not determine exactly how learning will progress in every classroom. With the three terms having different lengths, teachers will need to consider the actual teaching time available when distributing curriculum indicators across their schemes of learning.

Learners may also require more time on some concepts than others. If an indicator takes longer than expected, a teacher may need to adjust the original plan rather than move on simply because the calendar has moved into another week. The important consideration is whether learners are making the expected progress.

This makes curriculum monitoring an important part of teaching throughout the year. The calendar gives teachers the dates, but teachers still have to manage the learning journey within those dates.

What School Leaders Need to Prepare For
For headteachers and school administrators, the release of the calendar provides an opportunity to begin planning school operations well ahead of each term. Class arrangements, teacher responsibilities, timetables, curriculum planning, attendance monitoring, assessment periods, BECE preparation and other school programmes will all need to fit within the academic year.

The different term lengths also mean that school leaders will need to consider how activities are distributed throughout the year. Having the approved dates available early allows schools to coordinate their plans around the actual academic schedule rather than making arrangements without a clear framework.

Important Dates for the 2026/2027 Academic Year
The first term will run from 8 September to 17 December 2026, with the mid-term break scheduled for 5–6 November. The Christmas vacation will run from 18 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, with the second term beginning on 5 January.

The second term will close on 25 March 2027, followed by the vacation from 26 March to 19 April. The third term will begin on 20 April and end on 22 July 2027, with the end-of-year vacation starting on 23 July.

For JHS schools and BECE candidates, the 2027 BECE is scheduled for 5–12 May 2027. The examination will take place during the third term, making it important for schools to plan curriculum coverage and revision well before that period.

Planning for the New Academic Year
The release of the 2026/2027 academic calendar gives schools a clear starting point for preparing for the year ahead. Teachers can begin reviewing their curriculum requirements, considering the teaching time available and thinking about how schemes of learning, lesson preparation and assessment will fit into each term.

However, planning should go beyond simply counting the number of weeks in each term. Schools will also need to consider public holidays, mid-term breaks, examinations, school programmes and co-curricular activities such as sports and games and cultural activities. While these activities are an important part of school life and contribute to learners' wider development, they can affect the number of periods available for classroom teaching.

This is particularly important when teachers are preparing schemes of learning. An indicator that appears to fit comfortably within a particular number of weeks may require adjustment once the actual timetable, holidays, school activities and available teaching periods are taken into account.

For headteachers, the calendar provides a framework for coordinating school-wide activities and monitoring teaching and learning. Timetables, assessments, BECE preparation, sports and games, cultural programmes and other school activities can be planned around the term dates, helping schools make better use of the time available.

Teachers may also need to review their plans as the term progresses. Learners may require additional time to understand a concept, a school activity may affect a planned lesson, or an unexpected change may reduce the available teaching time. A scheme of learning should therefore provide direction while still allowing teachers to make reasonable adjustments.

Parents can also use the calendar to plan around school reopening, vacations and important examination periods, while learners preparing for the BECE have a clear examination window around which to organise their preparation.

The academic calendar provides the framework, but the actual academic year will be shaped by what happens inside each school. Good planning means knowing the dates, understanding the time available and being prepared to adjust when the realities of school life require it.
